What is CIRS (Chronic Inflammatory Response Syndrome)
CIRS was first used as a term in the 1990s by Dr Ritchie Shoemaker to describe a particular multi-system,multi-symptom chronic illness.
Exposure to certain environmental organisms called biotoxins is understood to trigger this chronic inflammatory response in the body.
The exposure can be from water-damaged buildings, post-Lyme syndrome, a fish-borne illness called Ciguatera, mold exposure and some other less commonly found bio toxins in the UK.
The susceptible person (having a certain gene) exposed to these biotoxins experience a multitude of symptoms in multiple systems of their body even if the exposure has long gone.
CIRS can often be the root cause of other diagnoses such as chronic Fatigue syndrome, Fibromyalgia, Autoimmune conditions, and even Cognitive decline and Neurological issues such as Parkinson’s disease, Multiple sclerosis and Functional neurological disorder.
